Jelf Road
Jelf Road reimagines a long-neglected Victorian convenience store as a contemporary family home, using light, proportion and materiality as primary design drivers. The project involved a complete reconfiguration of the street-facing façade, the insertion of a new basement level, and a comprehensive internal transformation.
Despite its earlier change of use to residential, the building had lost any discernible identity. The new façade responds by abstracting familiar elements of the local vernacular and manipulating scale to introduce confident architectural moves. Oversized windows and an exaggerated entrance bay lend the mid-terrace elevation a renewed sense of presence—both grounded in its context and unapologetically expressive.
Inside, a pared-back monochromatic palette establishes a quiet backdrop for living, allowing light and texture to take precedence. Generous use of timber enriches the interiors with warmth and tactility, reinforcing a subtle connection to nature and creating spaces that promote calm and well-being.
