Welland Mews
Welland Mews sits quietly among a series of post-dockland mews houses along the Ornamental Canal, between St Katharine Docks and Wapping. The project is a complete refurbishment that places craftsmanship and spatial clarity at its core.
Tasked with transforming a narrow, four-storey home previously fragmented into small and inefficient rooms, Architects in Practice began by stripping the interior back to its essentials. Working carefully around the existing stair and primary structural elements, a new spatial hierarchy was established — one that brings light, generosity and coherence to the vertical plan.
The ground floor is conceived as a social heart, with a kitchen and dining space designed for entertaining and connected directly to a small garden. Above, the first floor is dedicated to family living, while the upper levels accommodate sleeping and working spaces, each responding to the home’s vertical rhythm.
The architectural language is intentionally restrained. Full-height frameless doors, flush floor-to-wall and ceiling junctions, and finely crafted bespoke joinery create an interior that is calm and precise. A palette of natural materials — timber and marble used across all touch-point surfaces — introduces warmth and tactility, resulting in a home that feels light, considered and quietly confident.
